Ceylon Army was renamed as Sri Lankan Army under the government of Mrs.Sirimavo Bandaranaike in 1971.All officers and soldiers took oaths under the new republic of Sri Lanka. Introduction of a new regimental era, the Army Headquarters was issued new caps badges and other insignia for approval. This is one of the largest and oldest of the Sri Lanka Armed forces.

The settlers on the East Coast would have moved inland along the Mahavali Ganga.
