Summary
This role is as an integral part of the Education and Publication division that is responsible for key global data integration, delivery through BI tools, planning modeling, statistical tools, and data visualization solutions. The candidate will have a passion for driving usage and enhancing clarity of data to enable product and business decisions that improve student and business outcomes. 
 
This engaged data practitioner will work closely with & support our data science & product teams in learning more about our users, how our students learn, and how our instructors teach. They will contribute to Wiley's leadership position by supporting publishable research efforts and efficacy studies in partnerships with our schools on the impact of our products. The Analytics Engineer will accelerate development by iteratively prototyping new kinds of actionable analytics and reports that can be quickly vetted before development. 
 
Responsibilities

  • Empower data-informed product development for Wiley learning technologies, with a focus on the Knewton platform and Alta
  • With Product Managers, develop Knewton and Alta KPI dashboards to understand product health as it evolves
  • Investigate specific problems or opportunities raised by the Product team about particular roadmap items (e.g. usage of a particular feature of the product, a fraction of students experiencing a loss of progress, etc.)
  • Provide analysis of content effectiveness to all Wiley products using the Knewton API
  • Help extend Alta dashboards & metrics to other Ed Pub products for greater insights
  • Investigate the efficacy of our adaptive products: Monitor health, investigate failures; conduct larger studies.
  • Create metrics and visualizations of adaptive experience health (including e.g. length of experience, learning rate, content repetition, presence of unproductive behaviors)
  • Monitor the health of adaptive experiences broken down by key features like content domain, institution, pedagogical use case, in service of an expansion of titles supported by adaptivity; take selective deeper dives to better understand where improvements are needed.
  • Perform analysis supporting broader, publishable efficacy studies, sharing our findings around the impact of adaptive learning in a variety of venues possibly including academic publications and conferences, to re-establish Wiley as a leader in the field.
  • Assist with prototyping new analytics features (e.g. Academic Integrity reporting, Week at Glance reports).
  • Work with data scientists and product managers to create initial analysis notebooks that can be turned into prototypes for piloting new analysis capabilities with users.
  • Work with users and product managers to iterate on these prototypes based on feedback.
  • Partner with professors investigating Wiley product effectiveness including as relates to equity in education.
  • Provide data and/or analysis to support a research plan developed combining Wiley data and a professor’s data to study the effectiveness of Wiley’s adaptive products in the classroom.
  • Ideally: Be able to lead discussions with professors to design research methodology.
  • Pursue research partnerships with certain universities that have expressed interest.
  • Provide data and/or analysis to support longer-term research plans made with strategic university partners to advance innovation in data-informed educational supports.
  • Selectively take on ad hoc engagements to create marketing collateral or do deeper dive analysis asks for high-value institutions/professors.
  • Write up findings as blog posts to be shared with customers (directly or embedded in presentations).
  • Assist individual users to help them answer questions about what’s happening in their classes, using this as an opportunity to do user research and understand what kinds of insights help our users.

 
Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in mathematics, computer science, finance or related fields
  • 5+ years’ experience in data and analytics
  • 3+ years of working experience with Python
  • Extensive experience with the Jupyter/pandas ecosystem
  • Highly experienced in building notebooks and dashboards that break sophisticated analyses into digestible visualizations for internal and external stakeholders less familiar with the data
  • 2+ years of experience in working with agile teams. Able to groom the backlog, work with the business in prioritizing the roadmap and sprint planning.
  • Able to work with the agile teams in delivering sprints in a timely manner and leading daily stand-ups
  • Familiarity with business intelligence tools like Snowflake and PowerBI
  • Excellent SQL query skills a plus but not required
