Ace Your Next Job Interview in Style!

Stressing over the umpteenth interview and wondering if you’ll finally land that job?! It’s all about making the best first impression! Your qualifications and experience have gotten you to the door, now is your chance to woo the interview panel, and get through it!

Here are a few tips to help you bring your A-game at your next interview:

Prepare, Prepare, Prepare! - This should be your go-to mantra for any interview. Winging it is never worth it, as your answers will seriously suffer if you neglect to properly prepare. Make yourself a checklist to ensure you have thought of the nitty-gritty details. A few things to consider in the preparation process,

Do your research –Make sure to do ample research on your job role, the company you are applying for, and be thorough with the highlights on the job vacancy advertisement. This shows genuine interest and will also give you that additional boost in confidence, as you have ample knowledge and talking points on the company, its operations, mission and values.

Mind the dress code Now that you have done your research on the company and gotten a feel of its culture, you’ll be able to gauge what sort of attire is best suited for the interview. Your best bet is to go for professional attire or business formal. Choose soothing pastel shades for your shirt/blouse and darker shades for your pants/skirt. Your aim should be to look your best, whilst also looking professional and modest.

Collate the right Documentation – A common question that would pop up before an interview is, ‘what should I carry with me?’ It’s always good to carry your most recent and relevant academic and professional certificates, in addition to a copy of your CV

Punctuality - Punctuality certainly is key! Organizations have heard every excuse in the book, and thus, have a low tolerance for delays. A non-punctual candidate looks irresponsible. The best way to get around this is to ensure that you leave sufficient provision for delays on the day of the interview, and somehow get yourself to the interview on time, ideally 5-10 minutes before the allotted time. Arriving too early is never a good look either, it makes you look desperate.

Think before you speak - At an interview it is natural to feel pressured to answer swiftly, however, it is okay to pause, take a breather, and take a few seconds to think before we respond. A well-thought-out answer is always better than a rushed one. Make sure your audience understands what you say, ensure your responses are clear, cohesive and calm.

Be Confident, Not Arrogant - You’re going to run into countless obstacles if you lack the emotional intelligence to work in a team and get along with managers, co-workers, or clients. Express optimism, with your words and your body language, don’t forget to smile, be pleasant and be careful of your tone.

(Actually) Listen - Stay in the moment and don’t let yourself zone out. Express earnest interest in the role, the company, and passion for the work you do.

Know More Than Your Elevator Pitch - Know how to discuss both your strengths and weaknesses and emphasize your best qualities and greatest skills, while putting a positive spin on your areas of improvement.

Expressing Gratitude - Don’t underestimate the importance of saying “thank you”. While the rest of the interview could easily make your case, this final touch will secure it. In any form of persuasive communication, and especially in an interview, building goodwill and rapport is essential for success!
